Would you rather be kicked in the boys by a mule or put your arm in a cage with hungry lion? As a Mets fan, that is the dilemma I find myself in. The Yankees and Phillies are paying in the World Series. How can a Mets fan cheer for either team?
In the American League you have the Yankees. The team that started the spend, spend, spend trend and ran the cost of ticket prices through the roof. The team lead by a bat throwing, roid rage righty that beat us in the 2000 World Series. The team that gets all the respect and publicity in NY. The team who has some of the most obnoxious and ignorant fans in the league.
In the National league you have the defending World Series Champion Phillies. The team who only deserved 1 of their last 3 playoff appearances. The Mets choked so bad in 2007 and 2008, they gave up their playoff spot to the Phillies. The team who has even worse behaving fans than the Yankees. As a visiting fan, you cannot enjoy a game in Citizen's Bank Ballpark or the old Vets Stadium. You may not even be lucky enough to escape without injury.
Would you rather french kiss your cousin or punch your grandmother in the face? How do you even enjoy watching the World Series with these two teams in it? Who do you want to see win? I decided to pull for the Yankees. I can't stand the Phillies. They are an NL East rival. They carry themselves with an unearned & undeserved swagger and their fans are worse then the players. Being from NY, I have been assaulted by Yankees coverage my whole life. If it weren't for the fans, there is a lot to like about them. If it weren't for the fans, I could see myself being happy for the Yankees when they accomplish something. If it weren't for the fans.
I'd like to see the Yankees win. They have great players and unlike on other teams in the league, their great players & high priced free-agents perform. I can't hate on A-Rod for signing a $275 million contract. If someone wanted to pay you 27 million dollars a year to do your job would you turn it down? When did you suddenly decide to hate money?
It's hard to dislike Jeter, but Tim McCarver can drive anyone to hate him. I'm so sick of McCarver treating Jeter like he's the second coming. I will say it now, Jeter is the best SS of our time. It's not about that. He makes the plays on the field and hustles down the line on every ball hit. Your kids should play like him. The Mets should hustle like him. (See Timo Perez game 1 2000 WS) "The Toss & phantom tag" vs Oakland. A great play yes. But Jeter was out of position. Don't praise him for making the running backhanded flip, get on him like you would any other player for not being in position. I'd also like to add, Giambi although he should have slid, was never tagged out. Show me on the replay where contact was made. "Jumping into the crowd" You cannot take the ball out of play. Runners advance one base when this occurs. Stay on the playing field, but again, gotta love the hustle. McCarver has been a lot better this post season. His Jeter love has been kept to a minimum.
I'm starting to feel dirty writing this so I'll cut it short. In game 6, I'd like to see Pedro throw 5 or 6 shutout innings then have the Yanks go off on Chan Ho Park and win it all. If it comes down to game 7, it's anybody's game. I can see Cliff Lee coming out of the bullpen to shut them down in game 7 similar to Shilling-Johnson game 7 in the 2001 World Series. The Yanks need to put them away in game 6 and not chance a game 7.
Good luck to both teams and Bud, there is still time to lock them out or cancel the rest of the series. Just putting it out there. Play with it, toss it around. If you don't like it, send it right back.
